Engineered for the Extreme:
Building the Ultimate Recovery System for the RNLI
When the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) modernized their fleet by introducing the INEOS Grenadier as an official launch vehicle for its D-class inshore lifeboats

The Challenge: Extreme Terrains and Massive Loading

RNLI launch and recovery vehicles face a brutal operational cycle
- Massive Mechanical Loading: Retrieving heavy launch trailers and self-recovering vehicles from deep sand puts immense kinetic forces and structural loads onto the vehicle chassis.
- Corrosive Environments: Constant exposure to highly corrosive marine environments accelerates the degradation of standard mechanical components.
- Complex OEM Integration: The RNLI required a front-end recovery solution that retained the Grenadier's factory styling and advanced front-end tech, such as parking sensors.
- Thermal Management: The system had to maintain critical airflow to the engine coolers while housing a powerhouse winch capable of relentless duty under maximum load.
The Redstart Solution: Integrated Design & Manufacturing
Redstart Design approached this challenge by engineering both the structural mounting and the mechanical winching systems to create a unified, fail-safe solution capable of elite marine protection
1. Bespoke Mounting: The SV-R INEOS Grenadier Winch Mount
Precision Manufacturing: The mount was designed and manufactured entirely in-house at the Somerset facility
. Seamless Integration: Engineered as a bolt-on fitment, the mount precisely replaces the center section of the Grenadier bumper
. OEM Preservation: It perfectly retains the factory appearance, bumper corners, and the original front parking sensors and wiring looms
. Preserved Vehicle Dynamics: Engineered to handle punishing structural loads, the mount integrates flawlessly without reducing approach angles or altering the placement of vital engine cooling packs
.

2. Mechanical Superiority: The Nomad Low Line Winch
OEM Capabilities: The Nomad shares the core mechanical and electrical architecture of the factory-fitted version, guaranteeing that physical stress and electrical draw remain strictly within the factory-approved limits of the platform
. Extended Capacity: The winch was specifically specified by the RNLI over standard options due to its increased line capacity of 30m, which is critical on beaches with a shallow gradient
. Extreme Durability: The gearbox utilizes case-hardened chromium molybdenum steel gears and semi-liquid grease instead of traditional oil, offering flawless operation in extreme temperatures
. Advanced Coatings: A Cerakote ceramic coating provides an unparalleled hydrophobic barrier against saltwater corrosion, and ensures sand and shingle bounce off the finish without chipping
. Secure Rigging: The Plasma Lock System ensures absolute security by anchoring the synthetic rescue line firmly to the drum
.
3. Fail-Safe Operation: The HC-01 Hardwired Controller
Guaranteed Connection: The RNLI intentionally opted out of a wireless setup to eliminate any risk of signal drop-out, radio interference, or depleted remote batteries during an active rescue
. Tactical Design: The heavy-duty, hardwired HC-01 Hand Controller provides a direct, fail-safe physical connection to the winch for instantaneous response
. Operational Ergonomics: The volunteer crew opted for the Mil Spec wired hand controller because its chunky design makes it much easier to keep track of among operational kit, and the integrated LED is helpful for low light operations
.

The Results: Field-Proven Reliability

By implementing this tailored system, the SV-R Winch Mount, the HC-01 Hand Controller, and the Cerakote-protected Nomad Winch—the RNLI has equipped its INEOS Grenadier fleet with the gold standard of coastal recovery
Zero Airflow Restraint: Because the Nomad winch sits low and tight within the Somerset-crafted SV-R mount, the Grenadier's cooling pack remains completely clear
. Tactical Confidence: A high-torque Ox Motor, variable gearing options, and enhanced line speeds allow crews to rig and execute recoveries in a fraction of the time
. Flawless Safety Integration: The vehicle's factory driver-assist tech remains fully active and unobstructed
. Client Trust: RNLI Engineer Sam Barton noted that the rigorous salt spray testing and Cerakote finish gave the team confidence that the winch will reliably support the RNLI to save lives at sea
